Upsilon Gallery, which has previously established locations in London and New York, is now set to expand into Milan. The German-Argentine art dealer Marcelo Zимлер (Marcelo Zimmler) will inaugurate his first gallery in continental Europe on November 18. This new space will cover 200 square meters and is located just off Via Monte Napoleone, an area recognized as the epicenter of fashion and luxury in the city.

This strategic move positions Upsilon alongside other galleries that are exploring Milan`s potential as a global art capital, including Thaddaeus Ropac, Cardi Gallery, and Robilant + Voena. Milan has long been equipped with the essential elements for a vibrant art scene—wealth, design, and a rich history. However, as noted by George Nelson in a recent article, the city has faced challenges in establishing itself as a lasting art hub. Zимлер believes that the current circumstances are different, citing Milan`s significance as a cultural and financial center as crucial for a thriving art market.

Zимлер highlighted two recent developments that could positively impact the art sales landscape: Italy`s unexpected decision to reduce the VAT on art sales from 22% to 5%, and a surge of affluent British residents relocating to Italy due to new tax regulations in the UK. These changes have already begun to influence the market dynamics, with Rome implementing the lowest VAT on art in the Eurozone and real estate agents promoting Milan`s favorable tax environment to London financiers.

The gallery`s opening exhibition will feature a segment of Osvaldo Mariscotti`s Valley series, coinciding with similar shows in Upsilon’s London and New York locations. Zимлер described this three-part project as a way to connect the cities through a shared dialogue. The Milan exhibition will showcase four canvases along with a bilingual catalogue curated by art critics David Ebony and Alex Grimley.

Founded in 2016 as an online platform, Upsilon Gallery has transformed into a hybrid model that blends dealership with media initiatives. Zимлер explained that the gallery`s business strategy now relies heavily on events, partnerships, and collaborations, rather than solely on direct sales. He noted that galleries often remain empty, so they aim to utilize the space for various activities, including talks, wine tastings, and readings, to create engaging experiences.

The design of the new Milan gallery incorporates Ceppo di Gre flooring and marble details, reflecting the city`s architectural heritage. Its proximity to luxury brands like Prada and Bulgari further aligns it with the high-end market. Zимлер emphasized that art is inherently a luxury commodity, making collaborations with other luxury sectors more logical than opening a cafe.

Plans are already in place for design-centric exhibitions during the Salone del Mobile, with ongoing projects involving artists such as Han Lin, who merges craft and fashion in his ceramic works. While the potential for Milan to foster an art-market boom remains uncertain, Zимлер is optimistic. He humorously remarked on the gallery`s history of opening during less favorable macroeconomic conditions, suggesting that success now could lead to even greater achievements when the market improves.
